Chico Colvard has the unique distinction of having his debut film, “Family Affair” (2010), a wrenchingly candid account of family trauma, chosen by Oprah Winfrey as the first documentary to be shown on her OWN network. The University of Massachusetts Boston alumnus and adjunct professor also curates the UMass Boston Film Series. Listing the films that have influenced him, Colvard has chosen both fictional features and documentaries, recognizing that the line between objective and subjective, between inner and outer reality, is best observed when blurred.

Though not technically a documentary, Ingmar Bergman’s portrait of an old man confronting mortality achieves insights that rival nonfiction. “With a fine-tuned black-and-white Expressionism and from a psychoanalytical perspective, Bergman introduces Dr. Isak Borg, a curmudgeon seemingly beyond repair,” says Colvard in an e-mail. “Luckily, his daughter-in-law penetrates the facade and guides him through his crisis with candor and love. As a student of philosophy, I was drawn to Bergman’s search for meaning in a world of absurdities. As a filmmaker, I was impressed by the dramatic task of breathing life into the lifeless and redeeming the unredeemable.”

Readers who watch Black Memorabilia, a 60-minute documentary airing this month on PBS’s Independent Lens, will no doubt thrill to the scenes shot at the Brimfield [Mass.,] Antiques Market, but the subject of this film written, directed and produced by Chico Colvard delves into the dark corners of a controversial collecting category – racialized objects, figurines and advertising, everything from “Jolly N” banks to Mammy kitchenware, confederate flags, Nazi insignia, MAGA hats and other ephemera. Colvard, who teaches race, law and media-related courses in Boston, takes viewers on a journey from industrial China to the rural American South to contemporary Brooklyn to trace the propagation of these negative totems of American material culture.
