Transcript of Donal Óg Cusack's speech

Below is an edited transcript of Dónal Óg Cusack's speech given at the Foyle Pride Festival

It's an honour to be here this evening. I come from a small village in east Cork called Cloyne. How do I describe home? Well. If I decide to walk to the shop and back that's pretty much the gay pride parade done for the year. So if you guys think you have come a long way, for me being here tonight is like playing Radio City Music Hall.

Growing up in Cloyne we didn't have a gay scene. We didn't have any scene really but we especially didn't have a gay scene. So I've always been a little bit innocent in that way. I was thinking of that on the drive up here today, something that happened just a couple of years ago when I said to a straight friend of mine that I thought a man we both knew might be gay.

What makes you think that? he said.

Ah, he just used a word there yesterday that only gay people would know.

Donal Og's autobiography wins top award

It beat off stiff competition from other top titles including the tale of a year with the Waterford footballers and a detailed account of basketball in Ireland in the 1980s.

The Cork GAA star said he has been overwhelmed with the response to the book.

“Taking the decision to write this book was a difficult one but once I decided, I knew it had to be an honest account of my life,” Cusack said.

Written with journalist Tom Humphries the book details Cusack’s life from his upbringing in Cork through his three All-Ireland successes, his role in some of the most groundbreaking decisions in Gaelic Games history and his personal struggles.

Tony Kenny, PR Manager for William Hill, said: “The quality of the award this year was outstanding, especially when you look at some of the books that didn’t even make the shortlist.

“Donal Og’s book is an excellently told story of a person with a huge dedication to their sport and someone who wasn’t afraid to put themselves forward as a role model to many in sport and life not just in Ireland but across the world.”

The book was also the public’s favourite, attracting more than 5000 online votes.

Damian Lawlor’s tale of a year with the Waterford footballers, 'Working on a Dream' came in at second and
