RD Burman Saab was a composer with immense talent and versatility. The very fact that his music has lived on and is heard and loved by the present generation speaks volumes of how futuristic some of his compositions are and how innovative was his mind to compose and record songs that would live for decades and decades.
What made RD so farsighted?
He was a man with multi-talents, played different instruments and had knowledge of different instruments which helped him in his work as a composer. Having learnt to play the tabla from the maestro Samta Prasad, he later naturally developed a very good understanding of rhythm which he used in his songs. Always interested in different rhythm styles and sounds, Pancham da introduced percussions in his songs like Tumba, Madal and Santhali folk rhythm instruments etc. He was also the first one to use a Bass guitar in his song which has now always been one of the basic instruments in any song now.
