Matthew Henry Barker (1790–1846), was an English sailor, journalist, newspaper editor and writer of sea tales.
Biography
[edit]Barker was born in 1790 at Deptford, where his father had attained some distinction as a dissentingminister. At an early age he joined an East Indiaman, and afterwards served in the Royal Navy, where, as he was without influence, he never rose beyond the rank of master's mate. Retiring from the service, he commanded a hired armed schooner, and was employed in carrying despatches to the English squadrons on the southern coasts of France and Spain. On one occasion he fell into the enemy's hands, and was detained for some months as prisoner of war. In 1825, he became editor of a West Indian newspaper, and was afterwards employed, from 1827 to 1838, in a similar capacity as editor of The Nottingham Mercury.
Under the name of 'The Old Sailor,’ he wrote a number of lively and spirited sea-tales, very popular in their day. He was naval editor of the United Service Gazette, and a frequent contributor to the Literary Gazette, Bentley's Miscellany, and the Pictorial Times. Rev. Matthew Henry Hodge (1805 – 13 January 1877) was a Congregationalist minister who had a substantial career in South Australia, being pastor of the Port Adelaide Congregational Church for 27 years.
History
[edit]Hodge was born in South Molton, Devon, England.
He arrived in South Australia with his wife and family aboard the John Munn from London in September 1849, and founded the first Independent (as Congregationalists were wont to style themselves) church in the Port area, which first met in a sail loft in Wills Street.[1] The boys resumed their education at a school at the Port run by a Mr. Perry, then attended John L. Young's Adelaide Educational Institution, where (named as Edward, Francis and Payne) they won prizes in 1853 and 1854.
The first chapel was built on a small block of land donated by Captain Hall at Alberton (or Albert Town), but soon proved too small for the large non-denominational congregation. A new chapel was built on swampland bounded by St. Vincent Street and Lipson Street, and Rev. Hodge conducted services at the two locations until Rev. G. D. Watt arrived to take over at Alberton.
