Once infamous as ‘the muscle man’ of the Dhanbad coal belt, Ramadheer Singh, inspired reel character in Bollywood blockbuster-Gangs of Wasseypur (GOW). However, with his notorious past catching up with him, he finally surrendered before the court of additional district and sessions judge here on Monday.
Uncle of Jharia BJP legislator Sanjiv Singh, Ramadheer was absconding for about two years after a Dhanbad court awarded him life imprisonment. The court of ADJ Nikesh Kumar Sinha on April 18, 2015 had found Ramadheer guilty of murdering trade union leader Binod Singh and his driver Mannu Ansari, while awarding him life imprisonment.
Binod Singh and his driver were killed near Bhagat Singh Chowk of Katras, about 20km from Dhanbad , on July 15, 1998. They were travelling in an Ambassador car and the assailants followed them in a Maruti van. The assailants opened indiscriminate fire and killed both of them on the spot.
Ramadheer, who was then chairman of Balia district board( Zila Parishad) in Uttar Pradesh, was absent from court when the sentenced was pronounced against him.
Amidst heavy police protection, Ramadheer arrived at the Dhanbad court with his nephew Sanjiv Singh and later surrendered. The court sent him to jail soon after.
