    Multidisciplinary artist Shilpa Gupta was born in 1976 in Mumbai, India. She received a BFA in Sculpture from Sir JJ School of Fine Art in 1997. Gupta has been the subject of several solo exhibitions, including at the Provisions Library, Resource Center for Activism and Arts, Washington, DC (2005); Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, OH (2010); Where do I Begin, Voorlinden Museum and Gardens, Wassenaar, The Netherlands (2017); and Museum of Contemporary Art, Antwerp, Belgium (2021). She has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including Young Artists, National Gallery of Modern Art, Mumbai, India (1999); New Narratives: Contemporary Art from India, Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, IL (2007); Critical Mass Contemporary Art from India, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Tel Aviv, Israel (2012); Ways of Seeing, Daejeon Museum of Art, Daejeon, South Korea (2019); and A Room of One’s Own, Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht, The Netherlands (2023). Gupta currently lives and works in Mumbai, India.

    Biography

    Mumbai based artist Shilpa Gupta’s artworks probe how people and their experiences are formed by places, objects and via processes of classification, limitation, and censorship. She has had solo shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Barbican in London, Arts Center in Cincinnati and has participated in biennales in Venice, Berlin, Kochi, Lyon, Gwangju, Havana, Yokohama, Liverpool amongst others. Her work has been shown in Moma, Tate Modern, Kiran Nadar Museum, and is in the collection of Guggenheim Museum, Centre Pompidou, Mori Museum, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art amongst others.
