My father, Prince Abbas Mirza, known as Basu to his friends and Prince to his old acquaintances, was the grandson of the last king of India, King Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh, a large state in UP, with Lucknow as its capital, which my family ruled for over 126 years, until it was annexed by the British in 1857.
